Quite possibly the best vacuum I've used

by Alicia T 2008-06-24, 94 people found this review helpful
This is a great little machine. I got one as a housewarming present, and am really quite tickled with how well it works. The amount of dirt it pulls out of the carpet is kinda scary, really. The lifetime hepa filter means no hunting for little cartridges that will become obscure in a few years. You just brush this one out, and you're ready to go again. It has an indicator light that goes on when the filter needs to be cleaned. It comes with quite possibly my favorite attachment ever, the little spinner brush thing that hooks up to the hose. The cord gathers itself at a slightly startling pace at the touch of a button.
Quite possibly my favorite part is emptying the dirt compartment. The canister unhooks with the push of a button, and then when you're over the trash can, you push another lever-thing that snaps the bottom open. No more turning it upside down, and then trying to knock that last stubborn clod out. This made me happy. The bit you push, and the handle to the canister are even towards the top, so you can drop the opening down into your trash can, and avoid breathing the dust plume.

My two complaints are more of a statement on my house than the vacuum. 24 feet sounds like a lot of cord, but really, on the ground it isn't. Also, the hose isn't that long either. It does stretch and flex admirably, but the force required to get it to stretch as far as it will go sometimes lifts the machine. It's not that heavy.

    Great vacuum!

I guess there's a difference between the Elite Rewind, and the Deluxe Elite Rewind. Either that, or everyone gets a lemon from time to time. I guess I just got a great model. I've seen other people bash this vacuum left and right saying that it falls apart after a few months and becomes unreliable. I've owned my vacuum for almost a year now, and can say that it works just as great as the first time I used it. Haven't had any clog or belt problems like everyone else seems to have.

Cleaning: I don't own any pets, but I do live in a 2 bedroom apartment living with 3 other people, so pretty much every place in my apartment is considered "high traffic". This vacuum not only has great suction, but the brush roller actually fluffs the carpets and leaves them feeling new. The hand tools work great. The "pet hair attachment" works fantastic as a couch cleaning tool. Our living room also doubles as our dining room, so crumbs are inevitable. If anyone has kids, I'm sure they'll appreciate this feature.

Functionality: The rewind feature is by far my favorite thing about this vacuum. Like the other reviewer stated, it does retract the chord at a rather startling pace, but can be slowed if you just push it down half way rather than all the way. Emptying the canister is also a joy. I have allergies that are triggered relatively easily, so the dirt release feature from the bottom is a godsend. It doesn't plume up a cloud of dust and it just falls out like warm butter. The chord is a little short, but its perfect for my apartment. I can just plug it in to the outlet in my hallway and reach just about everywhere. I'm sure larger households would require a little more maneuvering. This vacuum is quite possibly one of the quietest for the price. I only have 2 other vacuum's to compare it too, but it's certainly the quietest of the 3. Same with maneuverability. It glides on my carpet and hard floors very easily. I think it may be self propelled because it barely requires any pushing at all.

Maintenance: Cleaning the filter is pretty simple. All you have to do is twist off the collector inside the canister and rinse off the filter with warm water and let it dry overnight. You can take a toothbrush to the filter and scrape off the dust to keep it dry, but I prefer rinsing it off and letting it dry overnight so I can be sure its 100% clean and dust free. Same principle applies to the canister. Just rinse it out and let it drip dry over a paper towel and you'll be set. I can't give any input on the internal maintenance of this vacuum, as I've never had to clean out the hoses or replace a belt. I guess I'm lucky in that aspect.

Overall for the price, I don't think it gets any better than the Deluxe Elite Rewind from Hoover. The ease of upkeep and functionality of this vacuum definitely deserves a 5 star rating. Again, I'm sure there are lemons out there, and not all of them are manufactured as solid as the one I purchased. If you do get a well constructed one, you won't want to use anything else.

Possibly The Only Review You Will Need to Read

by Rich 2010-03-30, 40 people found this review helpful
This is going to be a synopsis of the reviews from the average reviewer and my experience. This is excluding the reviews that infer this is absolutely the best vacuum with no faults, to the ones that think this is a horrible vacuum. Of course you always get the off the wall reviews, plus the ones that give it one star because a part was missing, was damaged in shipment or just did not work when they got it. Every knowledgeable person should know this does happen with any item. And does not mean it's a bad product. Amazon is excellent at solving these kind of problems if you let them know within 30 days of getting the product.

Let me start with the negative.
Lot's of reviewers said the electric cord was to short. And I agree with them, I have a open floor plan "which is fairly common in Florida" and it is to short for my large great room. But 24 feet is not that short. Just takes a little extra effort, no big deal. Don't forget this has a automatic cord rewind, which makes it easier to shift from one wall outlet to the next without dragging electrical cords with you.

Another complaint was the flexible vacuum hose was to short. Which I totally agree with, it's extremely awkward and difficult trying to hand vacuum furniture dragging the vacuum behind you. One solution would be if they supplied an extra extension hose. I'm going to look for one, should be something out there that fits.

Another is the on/off foot switch which is on the bottom, which some reviewers mentioned. Yes it would be more convenient if there was a on/off switch on the handle. Can't change it, so it's probably just a matter of getting used to it on the bottom.

Someone mentioned " and probably took a star off for " that they keep running over the electrical cord when vacuuming because it's mounted to low on the vacuum. True it's mounted low, but that is what the hook on the upper handle is for. It's to hook your electrical cord over so it's out of the way when vacuuming.

They also mentioned you can't turn off the rotating brushes on the bottom. This is true and could be a problem if you are hand vacuuming and the brushes are set low and sitting on a wood or carpeted floor. If left there for an extended period of time they could do damage to the material underneath the brushes. Probably a good idea to raise the brushes when hand vacuuming.

Quite a few reviewers said the belts are lousy and break easily. I have not had that problem as of yet. Probably if you keep it away from larger loose items on the floor that will be sucked up into the vacuum this might not happen. I suspect the engeneers anticipated this problem and chose the inexpensive belt to fail as apposed to a much more expensive internal part, similar to a fuse in an electrical system. But just in case I bought extra belts. They are extremely inexpensive to buy. As they say a chain is only as strong as it's weakest link, in this case it's the belt.

I am sure you will find more negatives if you read all of the reviews. But I found these to be my major concerns with this vacuum.

    Now for the positive.
This thing looks great and also looks like it will get the job done. ( And it does} Just look at it, powerful looking, beautiful red color " I'm thinking of putting racing stripes on it" Just a beautiful looking vacuum.

It's cleaning ability is outstanding. I picked up so much dirt out of my carpet and rugs I could not believe what I was seeing.

I have a cat, and using the Pet Hair Tool it also does an outstanding job of getting cat hair off the furniture. - NOTE::; For quick pet hair cleanup try this brush Evercare Company 2300 "Magik" Brush with Two Surfaces it works well.

Watching the dirt go in and knowing when the canister is full was amazing to me. Unlike the bag vacuums, where you had no idea when it was full.

Emptying the canister was a snap, easy out, easy cleaning and easy in. Yes some dust does come out when emptying the canister. Best to do in a garage or downwind outside. You can use a cheap paper face mask when cleaning it out if you are concerned with breathing the dust.

The automatic cord rewind is a great feature, and works well.

Also the height of the rotating brushes are extremely easy to adjust up or down.

I found this vacuum works equally well on ceramic tiles, carpet and throw rugs, I use it on all three. Caution!! It will suck up the ends of throw rugs, particularly if they have loose ends or tassels on the edges. On any hard flat surface such as ceramic tiles or wood its probably best to raise the brushes since they tend to kick and slide whatever they encounter across the floor.

The vacuum has holders for the flexible hose and all the attachments that come with it. Which is nice and handy.

It also has a convenient handle to carry the vacuum from room to room, or to where you are going to empty it out at.

Finally it has a great head light, I guess that's in case you want to vacuum or cruise around at night.

    In Conclusion
This is a solid 4 1/2 + star vacuum, particularly for the Gold Box special price or even the regular price. I'm sure there are better vacuums out there if you choose to spend 3 or 4 times more. So far I am extremely happy with this vacuum, and very glad I bought it.

UPDATE;::: I have used my vacuum for 6 months now, No broken belts, No strange noises and the suction is just as good as when it was new.
In the last 6 months I have watched the price of this vacuum fluctuate between 65 to 165 dollars on Amazon which is totally ridiculous. So do your homework before you buy this.

    Rewind is great!

The retrackable cord is awesome - wouldn't want to go back! I love that every intake valve can be cleaned easily (instructions in the manual). With 3 kids and two dogs - I can plan on clogs! Belt is standard - get 2 for $2.29 at Target (I've had others that I didn't realize took special order belts). Picks up great on carpet and solid surface. Only wish the cord was a little longer. Great value - I've tried lots of brands and am happy to be back to a trusty Hoover -

    Better than expected

I just picked one up today, so I get to give you a "real" first impression.

My current 15 yr. old vacuum burned up a belt and I couldn't find a replacement, so I was forced to buy an entirely new vacuum. I chose this Hoover because my last one was a Hoover also, and performed great for years.

I guess my old vac didn't perform so well in the last few weeks of its life, because this new one picked up dirt, dust and cat hair I was missing before. The advantage to the canister vac is that you can see what you're picking up, and wow, the carpet that I thought was still fairly clean turned out to be disgusting.

The old Hoover seemed to have more suction than the Hoover Elite Deluxe, but it didn't equate to better cleaning. This new one really cleans well.

The attachment does not have an electrical connection to spin the brush, it spins by suction. I thought to myself "Self, that ain't gonna work too well." Well, it looks like I no longer need my noisy, heavy, hand held vac. The attachment cleans better than my name brand hand vac at removing cat hair from the couch.

If you're looking for a vacuum in this price range, I recommend the Hoover Elite Rewind Deluxe Bagless Upright Vacuum, despite its awkward name. I'd buy one again.

    Beware!

by Ingrid 2010-03-15, 25 people found this review helpful
I did purchase this vacuum at Best Buy 2 years ago for this same price. For the first few months it worked OK, afterwards the suction was less. I could see the little pieces of lint remaining on the carpet and had to work same area over and over... About 2 weeks after 1-year warranty was over it started being noisy and smelling like burned plastic. I finally figured out that the roller brush was out of alignment, which caused radial beat and made it rub against the plastic guides, thus generating lots of heat and burning and melting both the brush and the flimsy plastic guide tabs (making alignment worse). When I ordered the replacement brush online from Hoover, they sent me a wooden one, that's right, curved out of solid piece of wood, pine I think! The sales rep told me that they had "re-engineered" the brush due to the rubbing and burning problems. The wood brush was working with incredible noise, and suction power still being very weak and getting worse. Finally I had enough of this and just replaced this vacuum. I can say that for $89 I got about 5 good months out of this machine vacuuming a small carpeted apartment 1-2 times a week. Unless Hoover had changed the faulty design and completely solved the brush alignment and suction problems, I would advise to not buy Hoover Elite Rewind model. About a month ago I was at the store and could not help it glaring at this much-hated piece of "engineering" and pretty sure that through the clear plastic I saw the same wood brush.

    Works great on bare/wood floors

by Scott Yanoff 2009-09-28, 9 people found this review helpful
I went shopping for a vacuum based upon the recommendations in a recent Consumer Reports. While there are tons of models, the Hoovers of this ilk seemed to do well. I purchased the deluxe version and it was a steal at $129. Having used only canister vacuums on our wood floors, I wanted something more compact that I could easily store (upright)in the hall closet. This one fit the bill, and it's not too heavy, which is useful not only for myself having to cart it around but also for my kids who are getting to the age where they want to have paying chores such as vacuuming. A real selling point was that of the height settings for the brushes, there was a specific one designated for bare/wood floors.

Corners: This vacuum works great in the corners, but you want to angle it into corners such that the corner of the vacuum reaches directly into the corner perfectly. I recommend approaching corners from two different angles, just to be sure you get dirt out of the corners. Also, because it seems to do so well with the corners, you can guide it directly alongside walls and it picks up dirt easily but its rubber edgings mean you won't damage anything you run into.

Cord: The retractable cord is a must, and I can't imagine going back to a non-retractable. I agree with all the reviewers who said that 24 feet was not long enough. So, it just means that I'm unplugging it a bit more frequently as I move from room to room. One thing to note is that there is a small hook at the top of the vacuum's arm where you can lock in the cord just to keep it guided. It's not foolproof, but it's something. I mention this because other reviewers expressed frustration with running over the cord when vacuuming.

Tools / Hose: The tools are great, especially the fact that they are right there on the back of the vacuum (and typically stay on the vacuum when moving about) and you don't have to open any lids to get to them. The hose could be longer, but I'm not sure how they could actually achieve that unless they heightened the overall arm of the vacuum. It's easy to remove the wand and vacuum crevices. Even though it is plastic, I actually like this. My old canister vacuum had a metal wand/arm and I was more likely to scrape whatever I was trying to get at (plus I was too lazy to always put on the brush just for a quick clean up of a corner or crevice).

Noise: other reviewers thought that this vacuum was quieter than typical, but I disagree here. Because there's always a brush in motion, I feel that it adds to the noise compared to what I was used to with my old canister vacuum. Still, I just put my iPod on and crank it up enough to hear.

Canister: I can't imagine going back to a bagged vacuum. I love seeing the dirt accumulate with each cleaning, and I love that I can quickly get rid of it. Empty the canister is a cinch. You can pop out the canister quickly, and then unscrew the top to empty what's still near the filter. There's the slide button to open up the trap door on the bottom. My tip for users of this vacuum would be to ensure that when taking the canister out, make sure that the button hasn't already pushed the trap door a bit. I had this happen the first time I used the vacuum, and I've since learned my lesson. Also, I always empty the canister by first placing it into my garbage can and then activating the trap door. I agree with the reviewer who said that it slides out like butter and does not create must dust-up, but I still do the emptying into the garbage can outside rather than inside the house.

Other pros: there's a handle in the middle of the vacuum (at the top of the canister, actually) that lets you carry the vacuum around. It's a sturdy handle and doesn't feel like it would break. I use this for transporting the vacuuming between floors, or even when I am vacuuming stairs with the hose and need to keep lowering the vacuum every couple of steps. In the past, I've had to simply lift a vacuum by its arm so this was a nice design decision on the part of Hoover.

Other cons: as mentioned by another reviewer or two, it would have been more instinctive to have placed the power switch on the top of the arm rather than as one more foot-pressed button.

All in all, it's got amazing suction and features for a bargain price. Perhaps a more expensive vacuum is necessary for deep-cleaning rugs (but it doesn't sound like it from the other reviewers who use this on carpet) but I can't see why I'd ever spend big bucks on a vacuum beyond this one.

[Update on 4-20-2010] Tips if you notice a decrease in suction: 1) Make sure that the hose is fully in its slot. I think I had it pop out once. The same goes for the canister. If you take it apart and either don't have the lid on tight or the connection into the vacuum is poor, it will affect suction. 2) Brush or rinse out the filter. There are instructions in the manual to take the attachment brush from the vacuum and use it to dust off the filter. I've found that my filter gets filthy even a few months into use. Washing the filter out in the laundry room washtub made an immense difference in restoring the suction of the vacuum.

    Great suction and features...lousy belts

by earthangel827 2009-12-21, 7 people found this review helpful
I've had this vacuum about two years, and although it has been lightly used, I've been through three belts. Now the agitator roller ends are damaged beyond repair because something (probably long human hair) bound up the agitator - and caused the belt to break again - while my teenage son was using the machine. He didn't know to turn it off right away and clear the problem. Now after removing the hair from the agitator roller and replacing the belt, the vacuum sounds like a machine gun when we turn it on. There is no way we can use it, and we will have to try to get a replacement agitator roller. What fun! I never had these problems with my old Eureka upright. I had it over ten years without a single repair.

I have to say that WHEN IT IS WORKING, this is a great machine. Love, love, love the auto rewind cord, and the suction is really very good. It does lift the nap of the carpet very nicely and pulls up an amazing amount of stuff from the carpet. It's just a bit of a high-maintenance item, in my experience. I think the Eureka 4870 that got Consumer Reports Best Buy rating would be a better purchase for a few dollars more.

Great Vacuum - Make sure you order extra BELTS

by Kari Jackson 2009-12-02, 7 people found this review helpful
I agree with all the reviews that this is a great vacuum - VERY easy to empty and no bags needed! However, my belt broke (as mentioned by others) within the first month. I luckily had ordered extra belts because of other reviewers (2 for $5) and they are very easy to replace. The vacuum was up and running again quickly. So if you get this vacuum, order the belts!

Why spend big $$$ on a vac when u can get a HER-BU

by lrobbyrob 2009-03-07, 9 people found this review helpful
Never again will I pay $3-400 for a vac. I was commited to finding a vac under $200 but better yet in $150 range. And I did, The Hoover Elite Rewind Bagless Upright (too long of a name). This vac has excellent suction. It is light (when compared to my old wind tunnel). It moves effortlessly. The beater bar really beats the heck outta the carpet to get those specs in the canister. Also, it's not too loud (once again, when compared to...) , it's more of a humming. Once I set a good level for my carpet and just did the dining area I was surprised to see how huch of the little unseen stuff it got. This little stuff started adding up in the canister. I could see and smell the difference as I moved on into the living room area. I then moved upstairs and my goodness I could carry it up the stairs with one hand. It got the bedroom areas just as well. I was impressed with the operation of this vac. The add-on rotating brush does a really good job on the stairs. I was glad that my research paid off. This vac is a great performer for the price. The reason it got only 4 stars was because of the following: 1) The name is too long :) 2) A little on the low side for me since I'm taller I have to bend slightly 3) The hose and cord could be longer (be carefull of running over the cord, it gets in the way easily) 4) Should've included longer extension wands.
